Pros and Cons Of Wifi Calling

Pros and Cons Of Wifi Calling – Quick and Fully Explained Guide By Expert

People love to stay connected with their loved ones even when they are miles apart in different continents. Thanks to WiFi calling, we can now call our friends and family living on the other side of the word without burning a hole in our pockets. WiFi stands for Wireless fidelity, which uses the wireless local area network (WLAN) to make calls instead of using the mobile network. As many people are not entirely aware of this feature and also have many questions regarding the same, I am going to explain all the features of WiFi calling along with its pros and cons. This article will help you to understand everything related to WiFi calling to enhance your calling experience.

What is WiFi calling?

wifi-callingWiFi calling uses the wireless network to place the call without using the cellular network. This calling works best for people who have mobile network issues in their areas. For WiFi calling, you just have to enable the WiFi on your phone and check if there is an option of WiFi calling on your phone. You have to turn the setting for WiFi calling on to place the calls using such a wireless network. Many android and apple phones come with an in-built WiFi calling option that can help you in calling people without using the network of your service provider.

Many apps such as Whatsapp, Skype, Facebook, Instagram and others can make calls using a WiFi network. So you don’t have to worry about the extra charges as all these apps provide you with free calling to your friends and family. You just need to connect this network using your Home WiFi or any other WiFi hotspots. It also gives an excellent call quality for both audio and video calls. And unlike the cellular data that drains your phone’s battery, using WiFi doesn’t do that. An audio call uses 1 Mb per minute for audio calls and 6 to 8 Mbs for a video call while using WiFi calling.

Pros and Cons of WiFi Calling

Now that we know how exactly the WiFi calling works lets look at the pros and cons of using this facility.

Pros
  • There are no additional charges incurred by the users as they are making calls using the wireless network.
  • One can call a person living in other countries if their devices also support the feature of WiFi calling.
  • The feature of WiFi calling comes preinstalled in the smartphones, so you don’t need extra id logins for making calls.
  • Choosing a WiFi network over the cellular network is preferred as it gives better voice quality.
  • It works great in the areas where cellular networks are weak, such as building basements, cafes, parks, etc.
Cons
  • This type of call can be a little challenging when you are using WiFi hotspots in public areas such as airports, hospitals, etc as a lot of people are connected to the network, which reduces the speed of the network.
  • A lot of countries do not allow internet calling such as the UAE, so you have to find ways to call the people living there.
  • Many devices do not come with a pre-installed feature of WiFi calling, which you can check by going to the Settings menu.
  • Sometimes while making a call, there can be variations in the network signal that can affect the quality of your audio or video call.
  • Always remember to disconnect calls when you leave the place having a WiFi network, as the calls automatically start using your cellular data when there is no WiFi, which is chargeable.
WiFi calling vs. cellular calling

Choosing any one option out of both is subjective to the place you are using your phone. If you are traveling to some other country and do not want to incur roaming charges, then it is better to opt for WiFi calling. People who have run out of the mobile data pack can also use WiFi for calling. But if you are in a place where a lot of people are using the WiFi already then, it is better to use cellular calling as the signal strength can be weak and it can also affect your call quality. As the bandwidth of the network is shared between many people, the strength of the network is poor and can be annoying.

Concluding Remarks

WiFi calling is definitely a boon to humankind as we can now connect to the people whenever we want. Every feature has its own pros and cons, and so does this calling facility. You can use the safe and secured WiFi networks at your office, home, or library to make calls. For finding the WiFi networks around, you can also find the applications that help in finding such networks on your phone. Stay connected no matter where you are!
